Politics: Should Kerry Resign

Why is John Kerry still a Senator?

Maybe my memory isn't what it once was, but isn't it customary for a candidate -- at least at the Federal level -- to resign his post when he begins the campaign for the presidency? I believe that Bob Dole did in 1996, and I think Lloyd Bentsen did back in 1988, even though he was just the VP nominee.

Campaigning is a full-time job, one that leaves no room for fulfilling the duties of a Senator. Besides, if he loses, is Kerry really going to go back and continue on in a lessor role than the one he sought for the past year? Losing a presidential race in recent years often signals the death knell of a political career.

As The West Wing's Toby Ziegler said, "This is the NBA. You don't go from here back to shirts and skins."
